The price of pork is unlikely to rise leading up to the Christmas season as the country has enough supply, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Wednesday, October 21.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said that the country has 170 days worth of pork supply.

“So maraming pork,” he said.

While Christmas usually drives demand, which normally pushes prices up, the DA said that the current supply is sufficient.

“Sa [Christmas] usually aakyat kaunti ‘yan if demand is high, but supply is okay and since maraming stocks naman, baka hindi naman tumaas,” he added.

Price situationer by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that an average retail price of P290.85 per kilogram at the national level was reported for fresh pork, meat with bones during the first half of October 2026.

This showed a decrease from its average retail prices of P295.58 per kilogram in the second half of September 2026 and P297.78 per kilogram in the first half of September 2026, said PSA.

The DA earlier proposed to raise pork tariffs by 10 percentage points in 2027, from the current 15% in-quota and 25% out-quota rates to 25% and 35%, respectively. The proposed increases come as local hog production rose 6% in the first half of 2026, while pork imports and inventories also reached high levels, according to the DA. (GMA News)
