MANILA – Prince Caperal continued to prove his worth for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings with another solid game in their 95-87 win over San Miguel Beermen in Game 3 of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals Tuesday night.
After posting a career-high 26 points in their 102-104 loss to Beermen in Game 2 Sunday night, the former Arellano University Chiefs big man finished with 12 points, including two triples, in Game 3.
“Noong last game, parang mixed emotions kasi breakout game mo pero, iyon nga, talo. This game, it feels good na nanalo din kami, so focus na kami sa next game. Nothing special naman e,” said Caperal.
Caperal admitted that Kings head coach Tim Cone inserted him to the starting lineup in lieu of injured center Greg Slaughter to play defense on Beermen’s behemoth June Mar Fajardo.
“Sana mahirapan man lang siya, iyon lang talaga ang role ko. June Mar naman kasi, four-time MVP. So mahirap talaga bantayan iyan,” said Caperal, who went to Kings after Kia Picanto dropped him during eliminations.
“Pero iyong familiarity siyempre nandun na rin iyon. Tingnan niyo nga naka-ilang score si June Mar pero grabe pa rin. Kahit na ilang games na kaming magkabantayan,” he added.
Cone was also all praises on the 24-year-old forward and believes the latter will still be a key contributor for Kings until Slaughter returns from his strained hamstring and ankle injury.
“The first game he was a revelation because of his ability to shoot the ball and pull June Mar away from the basket,” said Cone. “(In Game 2) he was another revelation because he stuck his nose in the defensive side and he did his work.”
“The shots weren’t falling that much, but he made up for it on the defensive side,” Cone added. “Yeah, very special two games for him. He’ll continue to be a key in the series as long as Greg is out.”/PN
