ILOILO City – The Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) defended the private water tanker caught getting water from its fire hydrant in Barangay Tacas, Jaro district.
General Manager Imelda Magsuci said the water tanker was not stealing water from the water distribution utility.
A water refilling station was renting the water tanker owned by Denver Elastron of Oton, Iloilo.
According to Magsuci, the water refilling station was a “legitimate water concessionaire” of the MIWD.
“We would like to clarify nga indi ni pangawat sang tubig naton sa fire hydrant kay legal gid na sia,” Magsuci said in a television report. “Legitimate sia nga water concessioner sang MIWD, dira sila nagakuha sang tubig.”
In a radio interview, Ryan Paclibar of Task Force Crusaders said they received complaints that the private water tanker was getting water from the Barangay Tacas hydrant for eight months already.
Paclibar said they were wondering how the water tanker was doing it because the water hydrant was locked and only the MIWD and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), which used it during emergencies, were allowed to open it.
Mario Morin, the water tanker driver, said Elastron, owned the vehicle that also delivered water to a hotel in Mandurriao district.
Magsuci said the water tanker sourced its supply from the Barangay Tacas hydrant because of the strong water pressure there.
Anyone can try and open fire hydrants, according to City Fire Marshal Jerry Candido.
“Gina-encourage gid namon kag ginapangabay nga i-report dayon kon may Makita [kamo] nga nagakuha sang tubig [sa fire hydrants nga] indi truck sang BFP kag MIWD,” said Candido./PN
