ILOILO – Barangay tanods hospitalized or killed in line of duty will receive financial assistance from the provincial government.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) approved on third and final reading Provincial Ordinance No. 2017-156 that institutionalizes this assistance.
The ordinance ensures a yearly fund of P1.5 million for some 30,000 barangay tanods in the province.
A tanod hospitalized for over three days would be getting P500 financial assistance for each day of confinement. The maximum assistance is P10,000.
On the other hand, the family of a tanod killed in line of duty would be getting P10,000 financial assistance.
1st District Provincial Board member Renee Valencia, chairperson of the Committee on Justice, Good Governance and Human Rights, the Committee on Zoning and Land Use Planning and Committee on Accounts sponsored the ordinance.
“Kon ma-aksidente kag ma-ospital, may P500 per day pero dapat ma-exceed mo ang three days confinement. Three days or less waay ka benefits,” said Valencia.
The ordinance will take effect after the guidelines or implementing rules and regulations would have been crafted and approved.
Tasked to draw up the guidelines are the following:
* SP Committee on Barangay Affairs under Provincial Board member Pablito Gemarino
* SP Committee on Public Order and Security under Provincial Board Member Manny Gallar
* Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office under Dr. Neneth Pador.
Valencia said a supplemental budget may be allotted for Provincial Ordinance No. 2017-156 this year.
What prompted him to come up with the ordinance was the death of 53-year-old Barangay Tanod Romeo Cabalong in Lampaya, Leon, Iloilo on June 20, 2017.
Cabalong fended off attacking rebels but got wounded and eventually died.
