PSA: Livestock slaughtered in Guimaras abattoirs up by 28.99%

GUIMARAS – Livestock slaughtered in slaughterhouses here increased by 28.99 percent in the first quarter of 2021 – from 3,273 heads in the same period in 2020 to 4,222 heads this year.

Most of these were hogs (78.68 percent of the total livestock slaughtered), data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed.

“The number of hogs slaughtered increased by 31.20 percent in 2021, from 2,532 heads in the first quarter of 2020 to 3,322 heads in the first quarter of 2021,” according to Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare.

Next is cattle which also increased by 22.70 percent – from 727 to 892 in the first quarter of 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Data also showed that while slaughtered hogs and cattle increased, the number of carabaos slaughtered decreased by 42.86 percent – from 14 carabaos in the first quarter of 2020 to only eight carabaos in the first quarter of 2021.

Losare also cited that in the first quarter of 2020, hogs were the dominant livestock slaughtered – 2,532 head accounting for 77.36% of the provincial total livestock – followed by cattle (727) and carabao (14).

No record of goats slaughtered in the first quarters of 2020 and 2021.

“Across the region, increment in the total number of slaughtered livestock in abattoirs from the first quarter of 2020 as against the first quarter of 2021 was seen in the following: Capiz increased by 42.34 percent from 15,700 heads in 2020 to 22,348 heads in 2021; Guimaras improved by 28.99 percent from its total 3,273 heads in 2020 to 4,222 heads in 2021, Losare said.

Losare also added that Iloilo climbed by 25.76 from its total of 59,433 heads in 2020 to 74,755 heads in 2021, and Negros Occidental recorded an increment of 15.73 percent from its total 88,114 heads in 2020 to 101,970 heads in 2021.

While livestock slaughtering in the four provinces increased, two provinces exhibited decrement. Aklan and Antique decreased by 20.79 percent and 1.95 percent, respectively.

Aklan decreased from its total of 39,825 heads in the first quarter of 2020 to 31,545 heads in the first quarter of 2021, and Antique from its total of 13,577 heads in the first quarter of 2020 to 13,312 heads in the first quarter of 2021.

Losare also stressed that the province of Negros Occidental got the highest number of animals slaughtered in the first quarters of both years while Capiz and Guimaras posted the highest increment of 42.34% and 28.99%, respectively./PN
