ILOILO City – The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in cooperation with the Agricultural Accounts Division (AAD) of the Macroeconomics Accounts Services (MAS) will conduct a pre-test on surveys on costs and returns of palay and corn production on May 28 to June 1 in selected provinces in the country and one of these is the Province of Iloilo.
This activity will be done as a preparatory activity for the implementation of the surveys which aim to assess, test the questionnaires and to gather other relevant information needed for the survey.
The generation of data of Costs and Returns of Palay and Corn Production is very important for these are highly requested information from major users such as policy analysts, national accounts compilers, farmers and other entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. For farmers, these data can serve as basis for the improvement of their efficiency and profitability; and for government and non-government planners and policy makers, these data can be used in designing appropriate programs and projects to boost the growth and development of the palay and corn industry. These data can also be used in the financial and insurance markets particularly in the financial institutions which require feasibility studies in every investment portfolio.
The general objectives of the survey is to generate data on costs and returns of palay production which aims to establish an up-to-date production costs structure; come up with updated sets on average use of material and labor inputs; determine indicators of profitability such as gross and net returns, returns above cash cost, returns above cash and non-cash cost, profit-cost ratios and others; and generate other related socio-economic variables that can help characterize corn farming households.
The pre-test areas in Iloilo were selected by the PSA Iloilo Provincial Statistical Office. The AAD staffs from Central Office with the assistance of IPSO fieldmen will be interviewing ten sample palay farmers from Dawis, New Lucena; Amiroy, Mina; and Guibongan, Pototan./PN
