ILOILO City – Mayoral candidate Raisa Treñas-Chu stepped down as executive assistant of her father, Mayor Jerry Treñas, effective October 7, a day prior to filing her certificate of candidacy for mayor in the 2025 midterm elections.
“It is both a privilege and an honor to serve my fellow Ilonggos through the position you have entrusted me,” read Treñas-Chu’s resignation letter.
During her stint at City Hall, Treñas-Chu promoted several initiatives and advocacies in mental health, gender inclusivity, sports, and youth development.
“I am enthusiastic to bring this experience and knowledge to greater heights and a wider platform,” said Treñas-Chu.
While she stepped down to comply with the Omnibus Election Code, Treñas-Chu’s presence at various public events, such as the 100-day countdown to the Dinagyang Festival and the inauguration of the Visayas Container Terminal’s mobile harbor cranes, raised questions from her political rivals.
Her attendance at these gatherings alongside city officials gave the impression that she continued to represent the city government, which could blur the lines between her official resignation and candidacy, they said.
In a statement, Treñas-Chu clarified that she was invited by the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI) to the event.
“I also attended last year because I received an invitation then. This year, my father, Mayor Jerry Treñas, wanted to deliver his speech personally and declare the 100-day countdown to the Dinagyang Festival 2025,” said Raisa.
“However, he is currently in Manila and is still recovering. So, on his behalf, since I was also invited, I was asked by my father, as his daughter, to read his message and make the declaration together with Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon,” she added.
The Iloilo City Government received an invitation from the IFFI for the official declaration of the 100-day countdown to the Dinagyang Festival 2025, said Joy Fantilaga, the mayor’s spokesperson.
Fantilaga clarified that Mayor Treñas, together with the Ilonggo community, is excited about this vibrant religious celebration.
“As a predominantly Catholic city, Iloilo invites everyone to join in this meaningful festivity that honors both our faith and rich cultural heritage,” said Fantilaga.
While the mayor wished to be present at the event, due to his current sick leave, Fantilaga said she entrusted his daughter who has also been invited by the IFFI, to deliver his message and officially declare the countdown open on his behalf.
“Along with Acting Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, they continue to convey the Mayor’s support for this significant event. Mayor Treñas remains fully engaged in monitoring the preparations and looks forward to celebrating Dinagyang alongside the Ilonggo community as the festival draws near,” said Fantilaga./PN
