Ramos mulls libel raps vs media, Monico

BACOLOD City — Bacolod City Water District (Baciwa) director Marichi Ramos considers filing a libel case against some media organizations here and Mayor Monico Puentevella.

Her lawyer, Roger Reyes, said they were still finalizing the list of media organizations — broadcast and print — that reported on Puentevella’s allegation that Ramos was a “fake doctor.”

Ramos found the tag libelous, Reyes said.

He said they will send the media outlets letters demanding an explanation on such report.

Ramos will push through with the libel case if she is not satisfied with the explanation, the lawyer said. One of their targets, he revealed, is Radyo Veritas.

Reyes said the issue started when Puentevella questioned the qualifications of Ramos as member of Baciwa’s Board of Directors.

According to Reyes, the mayor claimed that Ramos was a “fake doctor” for not having a Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) registration.

Reyes yesterday distributed to the media copies of Ramos’ diploma stating she graduated with a degree in optometry on March 21, 1991 from the Centro Escolar University in Manila.

Many professionals with degrees are not registered with PRC, Reyes said.

For instance, Darwin Destacamento, the newly appointed Baciwa officer-in-charge general manager, has a doctorate degree in philosophy and was referred to as “Dr.” but was not registered with PRC, he said.

Puentevella, for his part, challenged Reyes to secure a PRC certification regarding Ramos’ degree./PN
