ILOILO City – A member of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) recently surrendered to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Forty-three-year-old Anak (not his real name) yielded to the Antique Police Provincial Office (APPO) after years of armed struggle.
Anak – resident of Sebaste, Antique – had been an active member of the CPP-NBA since 1989, according to Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
He was also a member of the Special Partisan Unit (SPARU) also known as the “death squad” of the then Northern Front Committee-Kilusang Rehiyon Party Committee from 1989-1993.
Anak revealed that he was involved in an armed encounter against the Philippine Army’s 47th Infantry Battalion (47IB) in Barangay San Vicente, Culasi, Antique sometime in 1992 and among those who harassed the members of the 47IB in San Juan, Culasi, Antique in 1993.
Anak also revealed that his group was responsible for killing an Integrated National Police (INP) member in 1990.
In 1989, he said before he joined the terrorist group, for almost a year, he took care of the daughter of two rebels “Ka Mokong” and “Ka Ruby”.
Later, he became a child warrior armed with a magnum 357 revolver at the age of 16. He was issued a garand rifle by “Ka Mokong” and was reassigned to the Armadong Yunit Propaganda (AYP) under one “Ka Chito”. Anak said he became a full-fledged red fighter.
He was also assigned and attached to District SPARU (DSU NFC) headed by a certain “Ka Eddie” while being at the same time a member of Front Guerilla Unit (FGU) of NFC.
In 1994, Anak asked his group to go on vacation and went absent without an official leave (AWOL) from the underground movement.
Malong said Anak decided to surrender after he realized that a better life awaits him.
He also decided to leave the CPP-NPA for he realized that the ideologies they are fighting for were not true.
He told the police he also witnessed the corruption in the CPP-NPA organization which led to the starvation among the red fighters.
Their comrades who are occupying higher positions abused their authority by not distributing equally among its members their monthly income from the dues of mass organizations, alliances and revolutionary taxes, Anak revealed.
Although Anak went AWOL, he remained as an active supporter by giving some information to his former comrades in the CPP-NPA.
During his surrender, he turned in one homemade shotgun with two ammunitions./PN
