ILOILO City – Western Visayas needs more taxis, according to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
This dearth becomes more pronounced during rush hours, Regional Director Richard Osmeña told Panay News.
People have difficulty catching taxis, he said, citing the situation most especially in areas where people converge such as malls.
“The way I see it, damo kulang…waay mga taxi,” said Osmeña.
The director, however, declined to say how many more taxi units the region must have.
“The numbers have to come from them (taxi operators) and from local governments. Sila ang mag-send ng communication sa aton nga amo na ang kulang,” said Osmeña.
Once the number of needed units has been determined, LTFRB may start accepting applications for new taxi franchises, he said.
The president of the Association of Taxi Operators of Panay (ATOP), Engr. Perfecto Yap, told Panay News that in Panay Island alone, between 200 to 300 taxi units more are needed.
He agreed with Osmeña’s use of the rush hours as gauge in coming up with the conclusion that there is a shortage of taxis in the region.
“Ang aton kulang dira sa Robinsons, sa area sang Atria kag Plazuela everyday. Isipon mo lang tag-50 kada adlaw, that’s more or less 200 to 300,” said Yap.
He observed a surge in the number of commuters and attributed this to the business boom that Iloilo City is currently enjoying.
Yap said he planned to consult Mayor Jose Espinosa III regarding the city’s transport needs, and specifically how many taxi units could still be accommodated in the metropolis.
The city government has long been struggling with traffic congestion.
There is approximately 2,000 taxi units in Panay Island, said Yap./PN
