KALIBO, Aklan – A landmark in this capital town will give way for a pedestrian overpass.
Public Works department and local government personnel started demolishing the “Aloha” structure on Mabini Street, just across Kalibo Pilot Elementary School, on Tuesday.
As a result, the national street that vehicles bound for Barangay Caticlan, Malay — a gateway to Boracay Island — use was cleared of what not a few see as a major traffic obstruction.
Aloha was a project of Aklan Mossberg Motorcycle Club during the time of then mayor Federico Icamina Jr. in the 1970s. In 2008 the structure was renovated after it was damaged by typhoon “Frank.”
For years the landmark was a center of social life and an open space where locals spend time with friends and family.
In February the local government led by Mayor William Lachica asked Public Works secretary Mark Villar, through the Aklan District Engineering Office, to allot funding for pedestrian overpasses.
“The proposed overpasses in front of Kalibo Pilot Elementary School and Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital on Mabini Street and Crossing Banga-New Washington on Desposorio Maagma Sr. Street will safeguard schoolchildren and pedestrians crossing the streets daily,” Lachica said.
He also believes the Department of Public Works and Highways will install new traffic lights on Mabini Street, corner Fortunato Quimpo and the intersection of Desposorio Maagma Sr. Street. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
