Regular checking of all Bacolod sea vessels urged

BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod here urged the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) to conduct a regular inspection of all sea vessels plying the waters of this city.

“The PCG and Marina should ensure that the sea vessels are properly equipped with adequate life-saving and communications instruments during their operations,” said councilor Bartolome Orola.

He further said the recent capsizing of three boats in Iloilo Straight served as a lesson to strengthen the city’s maritime safety policies.

“It is prudent that Bacolod City must ensure readiness of all maritime assets and rescue personnel to respond during emergency situations,” Orola said.

He stressed that the PCG is mandated to execute maritime law enforcement.

“They are responsible to conduct maritime safety and security procedures and marine environmental protection,” the councilor said.

Orola also pressed strict compliance on Marina standards of seaworthiness.

“There is also a need to remind our riding public to be cautious and if possible to discourage any travels by sea during bad weather,” he said./PN
