MANILA – Reverting to the June to May school calendar by next year will be “better for the children”, said President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
According to the Chief Executive, he personally asked the Department of Education (DepEd), led by Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio, to have a concrete plan on the return to the old school calendar.
“Of course, hiningi ko ‘yan sa DepEd and I asked Inday Sara to give me a concrete plan because mukha naman hindi na tayo kailangan mag-antay pa at mukha namang kailangan na,” Marcos said in an interview on Monday.
“Í don’t see any objections really from anyone especially with the El Niño being what it is. Every day you turn on the news, F2F classes are canceled, F2F classes have been postponed, et cetera,” he added.
“Talagang kailangan na kailangan na. So yes, that’s part of the plan that we’re trying to do to bring it back already to the old schedule. I think it would be better for the kids,” the President further said.
The President further said that he hopes that DepEd will be able to implement the shift “hopefully by next year.”
DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Cesar Bringas recently said that they have made an “aggressive” recommendation to the Office of the President to end the school year 2024-2025 by March 2025.
The DepEd made the recommendation as it recognized some sectors that cited the heat in clamoring for the immediate reversion to the April and May School break.
It earlier said that they were planning for the gradual return to the old school calendar, but this could not be rushed as teachers and learner also need to rest./PN
