SAN JOSE, Antique –Ten towns in the province are strengthening their nutrition programs for children zero to 23 months old and pregnant women through the “Right Start Initiative.”
Dr. Loreto Roquero, country director for Nutrition International of the Philippines, said the program aims to help local government units perform better delivery of their health services.
The municipalities of Tobias Fornier, Hamtic, San Jose, Sibalom, San Remigio, Patnongon, Culasi, Valderrama, Bugasong, and Pandan were the identified areas for the Right Start Initiative.
The program will call for a more extensive mobilization to strengthen the existing nutrition programs in the towns.
Nutrition International of the Philippines and Helen Keller International have coordinated with the Department of Health (DOH)to implement the program.
Eleanor Lafuente, national program coordinator of Helen Keller International, said part of the program is to conduct awareness activities and advocacies to provincial and municipal health officers, local chief executives and municipal nutrition action officers.
“They will be partners in addressing nutrition issues of pregnant women and children through their political will,” Lafuente said.
Antique is among the 36 provinces in the country that need to improve their malnutrition situation, said Roquero, citing DOH data. (PIA/PN)
