Roxas City’s ‘odd-even’ traffic plan draws flak

ROXAS City – The “odd-even” traffic intervention plan in this capital city faced negative
feedback from commuters and members of the transport sector, mostly tricycle drivers and
operators.

Under the proposed scheme, tricycles were divided into two groups. Those with city numbers ending with an odd number are separated from those ending with an even number.

The scheme’s dry run was observed this week.

“Odd” tricycles were the only ones allowed to ply around Roxas on Tuesday – a day after the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections .

“Even” tricycles, on the other hand, plied the city on Wednesday.

Such alternate pattern of tricycle operation, which decreased the number of tricycles plying
Roxas a day, has drawn rage and disappointment from commuters.

They criticized the city government for not conducting an information drive.

“What a brilliant idea! This will add more inconvenience to us public commuters. Salig sila kay may ara sila kaugalingon nga mga salakyan, pero kami iya nagahulat lawig kag naga-bulad sa initan,” Mie Ann Garcia wrote on Facebook.

Resident Gail Barabasa told Panay News, “It took us almost 20 minutes of waiting before taking a ride. Kon ginlakat namon kaabot na kami sa amon kadtuan.”

Traffic Management Unit head Junie Jun Hervias said the proposed scheme aims to decongest traffic in Roxas, especially during rush hours.

“Ginapangayo namon ang pag-intindi sang publiko sa aton gina patuman nga dry run,” Hervias added./PN
