MANILA – The San Beda College Red Lions and the Arellano University Chiefs will begin their chase for the NCAA Season 92 men’s seniors’ basketball title as they face off in Game 1 of the best-of-three finals today at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Game time is at 4 p.m. with the Red Lions aiming to reclaim the crown it lost to the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights last season, while the Chiefs will be gunning for its first-ever NCAA crown.
The Red Lions reached the championship round after dominating the University of Perpertual Help Altas, 78-63, in their do-or-die game last Tuesday, while the Chiefs needed only one game to dispose of the Mapua Cardinals, 92-80, a week ago.
Red Lions head coach Michael Jay Jarin said that, despite dominating the Chiefs in two of their three meetings this season, they consider themselves underdogs against the well-rested Chiefs.
“We are the underdog here. We are just doing something right I think, and I hope we continue to do it in the Finals,” Jarin said. “It’s all about giving your best. Of course you care about winning, but it’s the togetherness that you will cherish for a lifetime.”
Chiefs head coach Jerry Codinera, for his part, said he is confident of their chances to bag a first NCAA men’s basketball championship as they have prepared well for the Red Lions.
“We are just happy to be in the finals,” said Codinera. “Dito naman sa Finals its 0-0 na lahat. Whoever is prepared and kung sino ready to adjust agad, ‘yun ang malaki ang chance manalo.”
Leading the way for the Red Lions are rookie Davon Potts, Robert Bolick, Roldan Sara, Arnaud Noah, Jayvee Mocon, and Benedict Adamos, who will fill the seat left by injured Cameroonian center Donald Tankoua.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, will bank on Gilas Pilipinas cadet member Jiovani Jalalon, Kent Salado, Donald Gumaru, rookie center Lervin Flores, Zachary Nicholls, and Dioncee Holts.
This marks the second time that the Red Lions and the Chiefs are facing off in the NCAA basketball finals. The last time the two teams met was in Season 89 where the Red Lions edged the Chiefs, 2-1./PN
