San Carlos City now under state of calamity

BACOLOD City – The City of San Carlos in Negros Occidental declared a state of calamity due to the escalating effects of the ongoing El Niño phenomenon.

Mayor Renato Gustilo signed the resolution declaring such on Monday, May 6.

This comes after the recommendation on the same day of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) to the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) to place the city under a state of calamity.

CDRRMC Executive Officer Joe Recalex Alingasa said the drought triggered by El Niño has so far caused P17,681,28.50 in agriculture losses.

A total of 375 hectares of farmlands in the city were affected, impacting 518 farmers, CDRRMC data further showed.

San Carlos City was the third local government in Negros Occidental to declare a state of calamity following San Enrique town and Kabankalan City.

Earlier, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said that due to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon, Western Visayas has suffered significant agricultural losses amounting to P1,494,162,900.

The damage has severely impacted rice, corn, and high-value crops across the region.

OCD Region 6 added that a total of 3,121 farmers were affected in Negros Occidental while agricultural damage was pegged at P117,485,448./PN
