MANILA – San Miguel Beermen hardly showed any rust as it opened its PBA Governors’ Cup campaign yesterday with a lopsided 118-93 victory over Blackwater Elite at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
Import Wendell McKines and Marcio Lassiter led the way with 19 points apiece for San Miguel, which tied TNT Katropa in third place with 1-0 as the team sets its eyes on a Grand Slam this conference.
June Mar Fajardo added 18 points while Gabriel Espinas and Arwind Santos contributed 16 and 12, respectively.
From a slim 13-10 lead early in the first quarter, Beermen pulled away behind 3-pointers by Lassiter and Santos for a 27-19 lead.
Then Fajardo and McKines dominated in the second frame to further widen the advantage 59-36 at the half.
San Miguel continued its hot shooting with triples from Lassiter and Santos to build its largest lead 106-68 on a rare triple by Fajardo and hits by newcomers Von Pessumal and Matthew Ganuelas-Rosser.
Michael Digregorio top-scored with 18 points while John Paul Erram and Shej Roi Sumang pitched in 14 points apiece for the 0-3 Blackwater, which lost its import Trevis Simpson to a torn groin muscle injury in the first half.
In the second game, Meralco Bolts recovered from a double-digit first-half deficit to stretch its winning streak this conference to three when it defeated Rain or Shine Elasto Painters 89-73.
Reigning Best Import of the Conference awardee Allen Durham, Jared Dillinger, Kelly Nabong, and Negrense Reynel Hugnatan took turns on the offensive end in the second half for Meralco to erase the 14-point edge of Painters.
Durham led the way with 23 points and 23 rebounds while Dillinger added 16 markers for Bolts, which tied NLEX Road Warriors on top 3-0. Painters, meanwhile, dropped to 1-2./PN
