UNIVERSITY of San Agustin claimed the title in the 2018 Iloilo PRISAA secondary boys’ basketball after an 81-72 victory over St. Robert’s International Academy on Wednesday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Carl Reinier Magtanao led the way with 14 points while Rexmar Jim Matulac added 13 markers for San Agustin, which was now headed to the Integrated Meet in December.

San Agustin caught St. Robert’s off guard in the final round, hanging on to the advantage for most of the game, until the latter threatened to come to within 4 points in the final quarter.

But San Agustin stopped St. Robert’s run when Arthur Peter Tuballes hoisted a 3-pointer to make distance at 7 points before thwarting every single attempt of the Panda Rockets.

Tuballes was later hailed the Most Valuable Player.

His teammates Matulad and Val Raniel Deaño were named part of the Mythical Team along with Wilfredo Dinate of St. Robert’s, Reynold Tupas of Hua Siong College of Iloilo and Franc Steven Tono of Santa Clarita International School.

San Agustin would have secured another title if not for the relentless John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University.

John B. snatched the tertiary men’s championship from defending champion San Agustin with a 92-54 drubbing in the final round.

Fritchard Dulce, who led John B. with 24 points, was hailed the MVP.

He made it to the Mythical Five with teammate Hiljohn Cartagena, Tyke Bano of SanAg, Marvin Cuerbo of Western Institute Technology, and Miguel Sasuman of Central Philippine University.

In elementary boys’ basketball, Hua Siong College of Iloilo beat San Agustin 64-47 for the championship. Jake Andrei Guarra led the Phoenix Graders with 24 points.

Amiel Dema-ala was later hailed the MVP while Guarra and Nico Salazar were named part of the Mythical Five along with San Agustin’s Chad Cartel, Ateneo de Iloilo’s Jurrien Tenorio and PAREF-Westbridge School for Boys’ John Adrian Altubar./PN
