BACOLOD City – Authorities are searching for a fisherfolk. He allegedly jumped off his boat in the waters of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental.

The 36-year-old Teoderico Castellano was a resident of the town’s Barangay Miranda.

With fisherman Reynold Catalan, Castellano ventured out to sea on Jan. 29, according to Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Negros Occidental commander Ludovico Librilla.

About seven kilometers from the shore, Castellano jumped off the boat to retrieve a water container knocked off by strong winds.

The fisherman, however, was unable to swim back to the boat. Huge waves swept him away.

Catalan tried to rescue Castellano but failed. He went back to shore and alerted the PCG substation in Pontevedra.

As this was being written, PCG-Negros Occidental was conducting a search and rescue operation.

Librilla reminded fishermen to always make sure they have complete safety equipment before going out to sea, especially at night./PN
