ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas plans to set up closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) at the Iloilo Esplanade to catch vandals and prevent crimes.
More policemen may also be posted there, he added.
“If there are savings, we will buy motorcycles and bikes. The Iloilo City Police Office is requesting additional vehicles for better mobility,” said Treñas.
On top of these, the mayor said the city government may also tap Criminology graduates as police auxiliaries to secure the esplanade.
Last week, the city government asked help from the public to catch vandals who uprooted ornamental plants at the esplanade.
Personnel of the city’s Beautification Program discovered the uprooting on July 11.
It would take a community to catch vandals who try to destroy city government projects, a post at the Facebook page of the Beautification Program read.
It encouraged concerned citizens to take pictures and videos of vandals.
“We also call on everyone to embrace ownership of our city and to aid us in seeing to it that we maintain order and cleanliness around us,” the post further read.
The Iloilo Esplanade, opened to the public in August 2012, has become popular recreational space for walking, jogging, open-air dining, and venue for river water sports. It was designed to harness the economic and tourism potentials of the Iloilo River./PN
