ILOILO — As this province marks its 125th founding anniversary, Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. is rallying provincial government officials and employees to sustain the momentum, deepen partnerships, and “level up” governance amid growing national recognition and support.
Speaking during the opening of the 125th Semana sang Iloilo on Monday, April 6, Defensor emphasized that the province’s steady rise — reflected in awards, recognitions, and expanding collaborations — was the result of seven years of collective effort across all levels of governance.
The governor framed the anniversary as both a celebration and a checkpoint, urging the provincial government family to appreciate its gains while preparing for greater expectations ahead.
He stressed that the province’s achievements were not the work of a single office, but the product of collaboration among local chief executives, barangay officials, residents, and institutional partners.
According to Defensor, the increasing volume of engagements with national government agencies — and the level of support extended to Iloilo’s flagship programs such as health initiatives and the Purok Resilience Program — reflect the trust earned through consistent performance.
“Plastado kag maayo ang programa naton. We are getting support from the national government and partners and stakeholders,” he added.
Defensor also challenged the capitol workforce to sustain the provincial government trajectory by continuing what has already been started, noting that continued excellence would attract even more support from national agencies and development partners.
The opening ceremony followed a festive foot parade led by Defensor, Vice Gov. Nathalie Ann Debuque, Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, department heads, and employees.
The parade, featuring the Bougainvillea Festival, moved from Sunburst Park to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol — formally signaling the start of the weeklong celebration.
Defensor said the Semana sang Iloilo serves as a platform not only to commemorate the province’s history but also to showcase the cultural richness of its municipalities and the gains of its governance.
“Congratulations because we are celebrating our anniversary. Let us use this celebration to recognize our achievements. And we will do better. We will level up here in the province of Iloilo,” he said.
