BARANGAY Semirara in Caluya, Antique welcomed its 2025 Coal Festival on December 5 with a grand opening highlighted by a world-class Christmas installation and captivating performances that drew thousands of residents and visitors.
The Christmas village, crafted by veteran event set designer Ronald King in collaboration with the Barangay Semirara Council and supported by Semirara Mining & Power Corporation (SMPC), featured cultural and heritage-inspired elements that celebrated the island’s unique identity and traditions. The opening program dazzled audiences with lights, fireworks, and street dancing produced by internationally recognized teams. Despite the large-scale production, the event retained a strong community character, weaving local motifs and stories into every performance and decorative detail.
Festival presentations also highlighted Semirara’s rich history while reflecting the island’s growing focus on tourism. Barangay Captain Catherine “Kikai” Lim said the festival’s theme, “Araw Natin ’To”, reinforces that the celebration “belongs to all”—from workers and families to children who call Semirara home. She emphasized that the event showcases community pride, resilience, and shared heritage, and she expressed gratitude to SMPC for supporting programs and initiatives that make large-scale community celebrations possible.
Captain Lim also underscored tourism’s increasing role in the island’s development, noting that it creates opportunities for small enterprises, boat operators, local artisans, and service providers. “When tourism grows, every sector on our island moves forward,” she told the crowd during the opening ceremony. This year’s Coal Festival continues to feature cultural shows, community activities, and guided experiences designed to promote Semirara’s identity and expand opportunities for local residents.
