MANILA – Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III called for a legislative inquiry in aid of legislation into the glitch in the Bank of the Philippine Islands’ (BPI) system.
The technical glitches on Monday caused BPI clients to lose money. People panicked and suffered from the inconvenience brought about by the service mess.
“The ‘internal data processing error’ which the BPI admitted to have ruptured its data processing system resulted in discrepancies in the bank account balances, debits for some and increases in the bank statements of other depositors,” said the Senate leader yesterday.
The computer fiasco was a “dangerous occurrence”, said Pimentel, even as BPI assured the public that the so-called internal data processing error was not a case of hacking as spontaneously reported by social media users in their public accounts.
According to Pimentel, the investigation aims to determine bank security protocols as well as the root cause of the data error.
BPI must also reassure the public that the same does not happen again, he stressed.
The lawmaker from Cagayan de Oro City also warned other banks about cyber attacks.
“Local banks must be on the lookout for possible cyber attacks as hackers worldwide have already victimized a number of banking institutions despite safeguards to preempt the commission of the crime,” said Pimentel./PN
