THE RESCUE of the American artistic swimmer Anita Alvarez by her coach shows the courage that people display when they are called upon as well as the limitations of the human body.
There are people whose courage is always on display when they run into fires, protect us, and save us but usually they are trained and ready although that should not diminish our respect for them.
We must praise and thank people for their bravery and hope that everyone will step up when called upon. Thanks to coach Andrea Fuentes for what you did and the example you set for everyone.

What is right?
The 6-3 majority opinion on carrying concealed guns is concerning. There is a difference between what the law says is right and what most of society thinks is right, and that difference will allow more mass murders to be possible.
Rethink the laws before somebody else is harmed.

No meet and greet
A fist bump for the leader of a country that bumps off its critics? President Biden should not have met the Saudi Prince.
The death of journalist Khashoggi is still a stain on the Saudi Prince and his country. The ongoing attacks on journalists and journalism in general must always be called out. Governments should protect their freedom and that starts with condemning these events and certainly sunning anyone implicated or associated with them.

Still powerful
The world’s most powerful person has caught COVID – what does that mean for the world?
Firstly, the most powerful person is just as human as everyone else.
President Biden is a senior and thus more susceptible to both COVID and the consequences of it, including the risk of death and long-term COVID.
Presidents need to be physically healthy given the workload and responsibility, and also mentally and morally healthy, something some recent Presidents have not always seemed to be.
COVID is still real, and the world needs to continue working on eradicating it everywhere. The same applies to a number of other diseases some of which have always existed and yet solutions are still a long way off. The world needs to be fixed and it’s not just the medical problems.

Set the truth free
Is there any real truth in the comment “Speech is free, but you have to pay for your lies” by attorney Kyle Farrar from the trial of Alex Jones who denied the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was real?
We know that some have had to pay for telling the truth and in Jamal Khashoggi’s case it was at the cost of his life but what of telling lies?
If you lie in court the cost might be your freedom but how often does that happen? If you lie as a politician people are so used to it that it is often ignored. If you lie in business, you might be sued but the costs of doing so probably preclude it from happening often. “The big lie”, actually the truth, led to the Capital Hill riots and deaths.
What happened to the days before conspiracy theories became widespread and accepted by so many? Sorry, but Elvis is dead. There was a time when a person’s handshake and word were all that was needed and that was because people told the truth.
We need to all tell the actual truth, not alternative facts, and we need to be proud of telling the truth and maybe then the world will start to heal. (dfitzger@melbpc.org.au)/PN
