SF Deizisau cops European Online Chess Club Cup crown

SCHACHFREUNDE Deizisau of Germany convincingly won the 2021 European Online Chess Club Cup which ended on March 31 at the tornelo.com platform. The rapid event replaced the regular over the board club cup which could not take place due to coronavirus disease 2019. Unlike other teams, SF Deizisau is made up exclusively of German players.

Incidentally, for those who may have come across the term for the first time, Tornelo was created on the cloud in 2008 as a web-based pairing program for over-the-board chess tournaments, which added the capability for arbiters to run online events last year. The platform has since hosted a number of online, hybrid, and over the board chess events.

The 2021 edition of the European Club Cup was a rapid event (15 minutes + five seconds increment per move) and consisted of a preliminary phase, a playoff phase, and a final 10-team all-play-all phase. SF Deizisau, bannered by GMs Matthias Bluebaum and Alexander Donchenko, chalked six wins, two draws, and one loss in the finals. Second-placer Clichy Echecs 92, led by GMs Jorden van Foreest and Parham Magsoodhloo, has six wins, one draw and two losses.

The final standings: 1. SF Deizisau e.V., 14; 2. Clichy Echecs 92, 13; 3-4. Mednyi Vsadnik, Poland Hussars, 11; 5-6. Odlar Yurdu, Hamburger Schachklub 1830, 9; 7-8. 4NCL Guildford, Ladya Kazan, 8; 9. Novy Bor, 7; 10. Cercle d’Echecs de Monte-Carlo, 0.
