CEBU City – Antidrug agents were investigating the possible presence of a shabu laboratory in Cebu following the seizure of “yellow shabu.”

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 7 agents seized on Thursday 305 grams of yellow shabu valued at P900,000 in two separate operations here.

“It has now been very difficult for drug traders to bring in shabu to Cebu, so they thought of manufacturing it locally,” Regional Director Yogi Filemon Ruiz said yesterday.

“This is the first time I saw yellow shabu in Central Visayas,” said Ruiz. “That kind of substance is more potent and more effective, and its price is basically the same as the white one.”

The PDEA was finding out where the yellow shabu came from.

“I could not say there are no shabu laboratories in Cebu,” said Ruiz. “There must be those who attempt to manufacture shabu locally. It is now a challenge for the PDEA to find out where these substances came from.”

SUSPECT KILLED

The antidrug agents seized the yellow shabu around 6:35 a.m. on Thursday in Barangay Duljo Fatima.

During the operation they shot and killed a drug suspect: a 21-year-old call center agent who recently passed the criminology licensure exam.

Niño Rodel Taboada reportedly tried to engage the agents in a shootout in his relative’s house, which he allegedly turned into a “drug den,” Ruiz said.

The aspiring policeman was hit on the chest, shoulder and neck.

Five other drug suspects — Kendall Taboada, Juanito Pescadero, Jun Lasco, Riolito Abella, and Michael Labra — were arrested during the operation that resulted in the seizure of 205 grams of yellow shabu worth P600,000.

Another suspect, Danilo “Lolong” Rica, managed to escape.

Minutes later the PDEA agents arrested Ria Mae Iñigo for allegedly selling 100 grams of yellow shabu worth P300,000 in her house in Barangay Labangon.

Charges for violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 will be filed against the suspects before the City Prosecutor’s Office. (PNA)
