ILOILO City – After a couple of months of construction, the city government finally opened a shelter for stray dogs in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao district.

The Iloilo City Dog Pound and Animal Shelter Facility can accommodate 40 stray dogs at a time.

Treñas said dogs in the shelter will be neutered or spayed to prevent them from reproducing; others will be up for adoption.

He thanked those who helped in making the project a reality such as the students of the Technical Institute of Iloilo City and animal advocate group Rescue Iloilo, among others.

According to Treñas, the city government also tapped restaurants, fast-food chains and hotels for leftovers to feed the dogs in the facility.

As lesson learned also during the pandemic, Treñas said, is that it is better to have many hands than alone because with many hands, many things can be done.

The dog shelter project was also being assisted by the City Veterinary Office (CVO), General Services Office (GSO) and City Engineer’s Office.

The CVO will oversee the shelter’s operation./PN
