BACOLOD City – The Land Transportation Office–Negros Island Region (LTO-NIR), in coordination with the Bacolod Traffic and Transportation Management Department (BTTMD), has served a show cause order on the operator of a modernized jeepney that was caught operating in an overloaded condition, endangering passengers.
The order was served on January 29 to the operator of a modernized jeepney plying the Alijis–Central Market loop in this city.
Mayor Greg Gasataya confirmed that the action stemmed from a video that circulated online showing the modernized jeepney on the Alijis route carrying passengers beyond its allowed capacity.
The incident raised serious concerns over public safety and compliance with transport regulations.
“Together with the BTTMD, the LTO-NIR has already served a show cause order on the operator of the modernized jeepney that overloaded and put its passengers at risk,” Gasataya said.
He added that additional show cause orders will also be issued against the driver and the conductor involved in the incident.
The BTTMD has likewise imposed appropriate penalties on the operator in accordance with existing city traffic regulations, Gasataya stressed.
The mayor said the safety of commuters remains a top priority of the city government and transport authorities.
“The safety of our citizens is non-negotiable. Any public utility vehicle (PUV) that operates in a manner that endangers lives shall be dealt with to the full extent of the law,” Gasataya said.
Gasataya also disclosed that he discussed the matter with LTO-NIR Regional Director Jeck Conlu, who confirmed that an investigation has been initiated. The city government, through BTTMD head Atty. Reuben Sabig, has also coordinated with the LTO to ensure accountability and prevent similar violations in the future.
Addressing public utility vehicle drivers, operators, and conductors, the mayor reminded them that the lives of passengers are in their hands and urged them to prioritize safety at all times.
The city government assured the public that enforcement of traffic and transport regulations will be intensified to protect commuters and maintain orderly public transport operations in Bacolod City./PN
