CAPIZ — Road accidents in Sigma, Capiz have dropped by nearly 50 percent following the implementation of its Speed Limit Ordinance, Mayor Dante Eslabon announced during the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Kapihan on February 12.
Eslabon highlighted the gains of Ordinance No. 05-S-2024, which took effect on June 1, 2025, as a key measure in strengthening road safety across the town.
Citing data from the Municipal Public Order and Safety Unit, the mayor reported that from June to December 2025, authorities apprehended 2,697 motorists for overspeeding, reflecting strict enforcement of the new regulation.
June recorded the highest number of violations at 846. However, the figure steadily declined in the succeeding months, with only 99 violations logged in December. The downward trend, Eslabon said, indicates improved compliance among motorists and heightened awareness of road safety rules.
More significantly, accident data showed a nearly 50-percent reduction in road crashes since the ordinance was enforced, underscoring what the mayor described as the positive impact of consistent policy implementation and enforcement.
“The decrease in road accidents reflects our concerted efforts to prioritize the safety and welfare of our citizens. We believe that enforcing speed limits is crucial in minimizing hazards on our roads,” Eslabon said.
Aside from enforcement, the local government also rolled out community engagement initiatives, including information campaigns and road safety workshops, to educate residents on the importance and benefits of the ordinance.
Eslabon affirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining and enhancing road safety programs, urging motorists to remain vigilant and responsible.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” he stressed.
