‘Single moms are modern heroes’

BACOLOD City – Single mothers were given recognition as the city formally started celebrating the National Women’s Month yesterday.

“We consider each of you (single mothers) as our modern day heroes who strive to support their children despite the everyday hardship,” said Councilor Cindy Rojas during the kickoff of the 2019 Women’s Month at the Bacolod City Government Center.

Bacolodnons should know that women have fought for “recognition and equality since time immemorial,” added Rojas, who chairs the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Women and Gender.

She stressed that today’s generation of women has “benefitted the most” out of the struggles of feminist groups in the past.

Rojas said women “are now emerging to be more empowered.”

“We see women succeed in almost all fields in society. We see successful women who are doctors, lawyer, teachers, corporate professionals, public servants, and even skilled workers,” she added. “Today’s celebration is to remind all of us that we are capable of becoming the best version of ourselves – one that is productive and helpful citizens of our society.”

The Department of Social Services and Development organized the program, which was attended by local officials and city employees.

The theme for this year’s Women’s Month celebration is “We Make Change for Women.”

In Bacolod, activities lined up include training on first aid and fire preparedness, a seminar on child abuse, medical missions, and a seminar on Kasambahay Law, among others./PN
