BACOLOD City — A unique and meaningful holiday attraction that highlights innovation, creativity, and sustainability was unveiled during the lights-on ceremony of a solar-powered Christmas tree in Barangay Bata on December 3.
Located at the corner of Lacson Street, the Christmas tree is made from recyclable materials, specifically Mt. Dew bottles, through an initiative by Pepsi Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI).
Councilor Homer Bais, chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Environment, lauded the private firm’s initiative. He said the solar-powered Christmas tree is not only a symbol of holiday cheer but also a powerful reminder of the community’s commitment to sustainability.
“By harnessing clean and renewable solar energy, the display reduces electricity consumption and carbon emissions, helping protect the environment while inspiring the community to adopt eco-friendly practices,” Bais added.
He also emphasized that beyond its environmental benefits, the tree contributes to local tourism, offering a festive attraction for residents and visitors alike. “It reflects our belief that holiday traditions can shine brightly while caring for the planet we call home,” he said.
Reports indicate that across its 11 plants in the Philippines, Pepsi is installing a total of 8.34 megawatts of solar capacity, which will cover 14 percent of the company’s total power consumption nationwide./PN
