BACOLOD City – About 2,500 kilograms of spoiled meat were buried at the composting area of the sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.
A meat shop owner surrendered the spoiled meat to Task Force Botagoy. Task force head Rex Juplo led the burying on April 1.
The shop owner called Executive Assistant Ernie Pineda, cluster head for markets and slaughterhouse, saying they want to seek assistance on how to deal with some of their meats that smell foul.
Pineda said the meat shop owner admitted their freezer was malfunctioning.
Pineda and Juplo went to the meat shop. Juplo said some of the meats were no longer fit for human consumption. Some have discolored, while others had molds.
All the meats were taken to the landfill to be disposed of and buried.
Pineda declined to name the meat shop, its manager and owner. He also declined where the meat shop was located.
All he said was the manager wanted to clear their storage of spoiled meat to prevent the other stocks from getting contaminated.
Pineda thanked the meat shop owner and encouraged other meat shops to do the same if they have a similar situation.
An eatery owner, Devine Villanueva, said the meat shop owner set a good example, particularly among public market vendors.
Government employee Ana Siralco, meanwhile, said she purchases meat only in mall supermarkets to ensure quality.
Rice retailer Roberto Amandera said the city government should reveal the name of the meat shop to make the consumers aware. “Why withhold the name? Are they protecting them?”/PN
