ILOILO City – Santa Clarita International School Primes and University of San Agustin ruled their respective categories in the 2017 Iloilo City Invitational Basketball League (Mayor’s Cup – 1st Conference).
Primes captured the crown in the high school category after a 93-73 victory over CenterPhil Montessori Silver Knights in Game 2 of the best-of-three finals at the Barangay Katilingban gym in Molo district.
John Bryan Sajonia was adjudged as Finals MVP for scoring 18 points for Primes, which ended the tournament with nine straight victories since losing its series opener.
Holding to a slim 46-40 lead at the half, Primes pulled away in the second half behind Sajonia, Ralph Bajon, Giann Paul Nahine, and Frank Tono to build a 20-point lead.
Meanwhile San Agustin clinched the college category championship with an 84-79 victory over Central Philippine University Golden Lions in Game 2 of their best-of-three titular showdown.
Their game Wednesday night — when the tournament also closed — was a continuation of their Tuesday night match that was halted by a downpour. San Agustin’s Mac Dangelo Vargas was named the Finals MVP.
“I told my players before Game 2 that we should come into this game with a mind-set that we are the one facing a do-or-die situation, and I am glad that they responded to the challenge,” a jubilant Primes head coach Rodel Camacho told Panay News.
“I know that CenterPhil is a talented team and we anticipated that they will come out strong, but we were able to make the necessary adjustments in the second half and finally we can rest now as champions,” he added.
Primes took home the P10,000 grand prize. Silver Knights had P8,000, while third placer St. Roberts Academy got P5,000./PN
