ILOILO City – The fisheries production of Guimaras has been rising for the past three years, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) records showed.
Fisheries production in 2015 amounted to 8,833.3 metric tons (MT), a 12.3-percent increase from 2014’s total production of 7,864 MT. It increased by 1.3 percent in 2016 with 8,949 MT.
The upsurge was attributed to the rising trend in municipal fishing, contributing to two-thirds of the province’s total fishery production.
Municipal fishing refers to fishing within municipal waters without a vessel or with a vessel weighing three tons or less.
For the past two years, the number of municipal fishers rose 22.2 percent and 1.5 percent last year.
The local government of Guimaras strictly imposes the law against illegal fishing.
Fishing boats from other provinces are prohibited from entering the municipal waters and the protected marine areas.
This allowed more fishing trips for locals, PSA records showed.
Cavalla (Talakitok), Anchovies (Dilis), Siganid (Samaral), Spanish Mackerel (Tangigue), Snapper (Mayamaya), Caeso (Dalagang bukid), and Fimbriated Sardines (Tunsoy) were the top seven species that contributed to the province’s increased production.
However, aquaculture production was unstable for three years.
From its peak of 2,616.8 MT in 2014, the production dropped by 7.4 percent in 2015.
It bounced back in 2016 but was still short of its 2014 output, PSA records showed.
The province received P6 million for fisheries projects from the government.
