ILOILO City – An 18-year-old college student who sustained severe head injury after being hit by a police ambulance while crossing a pedestrian lane in Barangay Dungon B. Jaro district has passed away on June 11, authorities confirmed.
The tragic accident occurred on June 4 when alias “Marga”, a resident of Masbate City, Masbate, was struck by an ambulance belonging to the Regional Medical and Dental Unit (RMDU) of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6). The vehicle, driven by a police corporal, was reportedly on its way to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office in Santa Barbara, Iloilo when it failed to stop in time, hitting the victim.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent several medical interventions but eventually succumbed to her injuries around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
Following this, PRO-6 extended its condolences to the family and assured that the matter is being dealt with seriously.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident. We send our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family,” said Police Lieutenant Colonel Arnel Solis, spokesperson of PRO-6. “This was not intentional, and no one within the organization wants something like this to happen.”
Solis also revealed that PRO-6 has directed the Jaro police to coordinate directly with the RMDU and the ambulance driver. As of this writing, discussions were ongoing to facilitate communication with the student’s family and determine how the agency might assist, including potential support for funeral arrangements.
While PRO-6 respects the family’s right to file charges, the police organization reiterated its commitment to transparency and due process as the investigation proceeds.
“This is a painful reminder of how every road incident, especially involving government vehicles, must be handled with the utmost responsibility. We are committed to ensuring accountability and justice,” Solis added.
Authorities are expected to release further updates following the conclusion of their investigation and discussions with the family./PN
