CELEBRATING the holiday season and embracing the spirit of Christmas do not have to be expensive. This was proven during the Lights On Ceremony at the Bacolod City Public Plaza on December 10, where students from different public schools in the city showcased their creativity during the Parol-Making Contest using recycled and indigenous materials.

The spirit of Christmas shone brighter when the Federation of Parents and Teachers Association (FPTA) of this city crafted the contest for both elementary and secondary levels. This included the Christmas Carol Singing Contest, in collaboration with the Department of Education Division of Bacolod City and the Bacolod City Government.

Mary Grace Dolendo, FPTA president, mentioned that one participating school spent less on their parol as it was made of leaves.

“It’s recyclable. They spent for the varnish and lights but only for a minimal expense since their materials can be found from their surroundings. It did not cost much,” she said.

The theme for this year’s Parol-Making Contest, “Parol sa Paglaum, Kasadya kag Paghiliusa sang Katawhan,” conveyed a message that the parols symbolize the victory of light over darkness, as well as faith and hope.

This year, 20 lanterns were on display and participating schools were able to showcase their creativity and resourcefulness. Entries must be traditional in design and can be made out of any locally available materials, such as any indigenous woven textile, malong, abaca skin, tinalak yakan, bamboo or; dried leaves, coconut, nipa, and recycled materials, among others.

“You will see how the students made a parol from scratch. This is one way to develop their talent,” Dolendo said.

Despite the short preparation time resulting in fewer participants this year, Dolendo is optimistic that more public schools will join next year.

“This contest only started this year, so we plan on making this a yearly event,” she added.

Winners of the Parol-Making Contest received the following: first prize – P20,000; second prize – P15,000; third prize – P10,000.00; and fourth to ninth placers – P5,000 each.

Also awarded were special prizes: Most Earth Friendly, Best in Craftsmanship and Workmanship, People’s Choice, Most Unique, and Most Artistic and Creative.

Indeed, Christmas season becomes merrier through everyone’s helping hand, effort and participation, where every contribution, big or small, matters./PN
