ILOILO City – A barangay tanod (village watchman) who allegedly hacked a fellow villager had been arrested.
Eddie Juanites, 68, apparently acted on self-defense, police said, citing initial investigation.
The victim – 41-year-old Danny Ogatis – was drunk and tried to harm Juanites first, said the police.
Juanites and Ogatis were both residents of Barangay Lombuyan, Barbaza, Antique where the incident happened at 2 p.m. on April 21, a police report showed.
That they had the same middle name, Canuto, suggested they were related. It was not stated in the police report that they were.
Juanites was sitting in their house when Ogatis barged in and stabbed the former with a chisel, police said in a report, citing initial investigation.
But Juanites managed to evade the attack. He then grabbed a bolo and swung at Ogatis, the police report showed.
Ogatis sustained hack wounds all over the body.
Responding police officers brought him to the Pedro L. Gindap Municipal Hospital in Barbaza.
He was later transferred to the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital in the capital town of San Jose for further treatment.
The Barbaza police station took Juanites in custody./PN
