Taste Boracay’s ‘love potion’

BORACAY – The Boracay Island Producers Cooperative (BIPC) has concocted a beverage that it promotes as a “love potion” potent enough to make women fall in love.

Desiree Segovia, BIPC president, said their “Loveanog” is a fermented wine made from coconut and juices of tropical flowers such as hibiscus and blue ternate.

BIPC has hundreds of women members who are mostly residents of this resort island.

“The Loveanog has been fermented and made through the help of a chemist from the University of the Philippines,” Segovia said.

“When one drinks it, he or she will feel chill and have an petite to eat more. The fermented wine has no hangover effect,” she added.

Initially, BIPC tried making tuba. “However, after our exploration of the product, we decided to use lambanog,” Segovia said.

Lambanog is a uniquely Filipino distilled palm liquor made from coconut or nipa palm sap. It is derived from tuba (palm toddy) that has been aged for at least 48 hours. It originates from Luzon and is commonly described as “coconut vodka” due to its clear to milky white color and high alcohol content.

Ingredients for “Loveanog” were sourced from the organic farm being maintained by the cooperative here, said Segovia.

Producing “Loveanog” gave marginalized Boracay women an alternative source of income, said Segovia.

“Loveanog” has three flavors: blue ternate infuse, gumamela.

In the past year, the BIPC received support from the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Labor and Employment and Philippine Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), among others./PN
