MANILA – Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts failed to hang on to its early advantage to suffer a 63-69 defeat to De La Salle-Lipa in the Elite 8 of the 2018 NBTC National Finals Division 2 on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Thunderbolts had a strong start in the match for a 20-8 lead on 13 early points from Mart James Barrera. DLS-L clawed its way back in the second period but hits from Barrera and Harold Alarcon gave it a 41-31 halftime lead.

The struggle continued for Thunderbolts in the third period with Stephen Javier and Ian Abila spearheading the run for DLS-L to tie the count at 46-all. Raphael Dimayuga anchored DLS-L’s fourth quarter run to bag the come-from-behind victory.

Javier led the way with 21 points, including three 3-point conversions, while Abila contributed double-double 17 points and 21 rebounds for the Final Four-bound DLS-L team.

Barrera, meanwhile, top-scored with double-double 23 points and 13 rebounds before going out with a knee injury in the third period, while Alarcon chipped in 15 markers for Thunderbolts.

“Nag-twist iyong tuhod ko (noong third quarter). Pinilit kong bumalik noong fourth pero ’di na kinaya,” Barrera told Panay News. “Sabi nga noong medics na muntik na daw ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury.”

Thunderbolts reached the Elite 8 after a 64-62 victory over Notre Dame of Midsayap on Tuesday at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City. Alarcon top-scored with 22 points while Barrera had double-double 20 points and 13 rebounds for Tay Tung./PN
