READING newspapers, I came across (again) drug-related articles. One was about a mega drug rehabilitation facility that could also serve as a drug enforcement academy.

Is this feasible? I thought about the possible and realistic approaches to this.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) is the country’s premier organization on anti-drug law enforcement. It has a PDEA Academy where committed and highly qualified professionals are trained. They are those who have a deep desire to be front-liners in the war against drugs.

As far as I know, PDEA agents undergo a six-month comprehensive and disciplined Drug Enforcement Officer Basic Course (DEOBC) at the PDEA Academy.

A mega drug rehabilitation facility transformed as an extension of the PDEA Academy can produce qualified and able-bodied PDEA agents. This could help address the challenges postured by the heinousness of the drug problem.

The drug academy can produce more individuals helping each other implement plans and policies on drug prevention and control.

Drug trafficking is a huge and complex problem. PDEA needs individuals who have a good understanding of the illegal drug trade, behavioral distribution and markets, processing plants and distribution networks, and capable of capturing drug addicts.

It is high time we update our understanding of the needs to win the war on drugs. This is to preserve the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
