MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses recovered from a set down to score a 17-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-21 win over the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the San Juan Arena.
Ennajie Laure led the way with 20 points, on 19 attacks and a service ace, for the Golden Tigresses, which moved up to solo third place in the standings with a 7-4 win-loss slate.
Cherry Rondina chipped in 15 markers, while Mary Pacres and Alina Bicar had nine and eight points, respectively, for the Golden Tigresses, which is close to sealing a return trip to the UAAP volleyball Final Four clash.
After dropping the opening set, the Golden Tigresses became aggressive in the second frame as it built a 16-9 lead on aces by Laure and Bicar. The Lady Tamaraws came to within 18-14 but back-to-back hits by Pacres pulled the Tigresses away in the set.
The Golden Tigresses started strong in the third frame to build a huge 13-4 lead but the Lady Tamaraws answered back and even tied the count at 24-all. However, back-to-back errors by the Lady Tamaraws allowed the Golden Tigresses to escape with the set.
It was a tight exchange for both teams in the fourth frame with the Golden Tigresses holding on to a slim 16-14 lead. But Rondina and Laure conspired for a huge finishing run by the Golden Tigresses to clinch the come-from-behind win.
“Kulang pa sa pandiin, hindi maganda sa mata,” rued Golden Tigresses head coach Emilio Reyes. “Hindi pa rin ganun ka-consistent yung basic volleyball, yung receive, pass at atake.”
Negrense Bernadeth Pons finished with triple-double 17 points, 12 excellent receptions and 10 digs, while Toni Rose Basas had 13 points for the Lady Tamaraws, which fell to a 5-6 slate./PN
