MANILA – Two senators and several Roman Catholic Church officials will toll church bells Monday as they denounce extrajudicial killings in the war on drugs and corruption under the Duterte administration.
Senators Risa Hontiveros and Antonio Trillanes IV, Bishop Antonio Tobias of the Diocese of Novaliches, Bishop Emeritus Deogracias Iñiguez of the Diocese of Kalookan, Rep. Tom Villarin of Akbayan party-list, and former representative Erin Tañada will lead the 1 p.m. bell ringing at the San Antonio De Padua Parish in Quezon City.
“The tolling of the bells will be one of the highlights of a mass that will be jointly celebrated by Tobias and Iñiguez,” Hontiveros said.
Several clergymen criticized Duterte’s verbal attacks against the Catholic Church.
In June the President faced controversy after calling God “stupid” for creating the concept of original sin.
“The mass will be offered to the families of the victims of extrajudicial killings and underscore the people’s clamor for justice, accountability and democracy,” said Hontiveros.
Expected to join the event, she said, are activists, youth advocates, sectoral leaders, and church people from Akbayan party-list, Kilusang Makabansang Ekonomiya, Student Council Alliance of the Philippines, and communities under the pastoral care of the Catholic Church./PN
