MANILA – The controversial statement of secretary Gina Lopez of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that Commission on Appointments (CA) members were offered P50 million to vote against her confirmation is “the height of irresponsibility,” according to Rep. Jerry Treñas.

Iloilo City’s Treñas, who is serving his third and last term in Congress, is one of the 12 members of the House contingent in the powerful CA.

The accusation against CA members was “highly unfortunate” because the secretary’s basis for her information was merely “chismis,” he said.

On her Facebook page last Wednesday, Lopez admitted she only “heard” that every congressmen was offered P50 million to oppose her confirmation.

“It’s tsismis, there’s no evidence, there’s no anything. And I said that casually. It’s not a news bit. It’s just tsismis, and they turned tsismis into a headline,” the DENR chief pointed out.

Asked if the allegation of bribery offended him, Treñas answered in the affirmative.

“I think all congressmen were offended.”

Lopez, who came under fire after her closure and suspension orders on mining operations, was also advised by the lawmaker to “please double and triple check your source before saying anything.”

That way, Treñas said, the spread of misinformation can be prevented.

Other CA members from the House of Representatives are Ronaldo Zamora, Tonyboy Floirendo, Rodolofo Albano, Benhur Salimbangon, Josephine Ramirez-Sato, Julieta Cortuna, Roy Loyola, Abraham Tolentino, Weslie Gatchalian, Sany Ocampo, and Joel Almario./PN
