MANILA – Government forces who fought during the five-month war against Islamic State-allied extremists in Marawi City received commendation for their “heroic deeds.”
President Rodrigo Duterte conferred them the Order of Lapu-Lapu Kampilan Medal during ceremonies at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Multipurpose Center in Camp Crame.
Officers from the PNP, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology were among the recipients.
“Their heroic deeds made it possible for our people in the [Islamic] city [of Marawi] to resume their lives in peace,” Duterte said.
The President also honored the memory of government troops were killed in the battle.
“They are the epitome of courage, bravery and patriotism. Indeed, for paying the ultimate sacrifice and for rendering extraordinary service to our nation, we consider them as our heroes,” he said.
Duterte assured the wounded law enforcers and their families of continued support and assistance.
The government released P500 million to hospitals for the medication of wounded law enforcers and will provide employment to the widows/widowers of slain forces, said the chief executive.
“Ang mga biyuda, may trabaho iyan. Lahat ng biyuda na pinuntahan ko, may trabaho iyan. Maghanap ako ng pwesto sa gobyerno,” he said.
Duterte specifically cited the PNP for their contribution to the liberation of Marawi and for helping fight the terrorism in other parts of the country.
“Your bravery and skill have truly been evident during all these police operations and encounters with lawless elements,” he said./PN
