BACOLOD City – An active member of the Philippine Army met a tragic end, but not in the war field.
The 28-year-old Corporal Galelio Alegre of Calatrava town in Negros Occidental was run over by a truck while asleep.
The truck and Alegre were waiting for a Cebu-bound roll-on/roll-off (RORO) ship in Barangay 6, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Monday, Jan. 29.
The young soldier was assigned to the Army’s Engineer Battalion in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
According to San Carlos City Police deputy chief Major Ryan Villasario, the 35-year-old truck driver Archie Silabay reportedly drove the vehicle to board the RORO ship at approximately 4:40 a.m. without noticing the presence of the soldier underneath.
Tragically, the corporal sustained severe head injuries in the accident, which led to his untimely death.
Meanwhile, the driver was released from police custody when the reglementary period of detention lapsed./PN
