MANILA — Iloilo’s rich cultural identity and historical pride got recognition from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos who both cited the province’s stellar performance in the Parada ng Kalayaan 2025 during the Philippine Independence Day celebration last month, June 12.

A ceremonial awarding was held on July 10 at the Kalayaan Hall of Malacañang.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. received the honors on behalf of the province, accompanied by Vice Gov. Lee Ann Debuque, Maasin’s Mayor Francis Amboy, and Santa Barbara’s Mayor Dennis Superficial.

Maasin’s Tultugan Festival emerged as the grand champion in the Festival Performance Competition of the 127th Philippine Independence Day celebration, earning a championship trophy, a certificate, and a cash prize of P2 million.

Known for its pulsating bamboo percussion rhythms and choreographed street performances, Tultugan showcased the community’s deep-rooted connection to its bamboo industry, both as a cultural and economic symbol.

Meanwhile, the Cry of Santa Barbara float clinched second place in the Historical Float Competition, receiving P1 million and a certificate. The float highlighted the valor of Ilonggo revolutionaries and commemorated the establishment of the Revolutionary Government of the Visayas on November 17, 1898 — a pivotal chapter in Philippine history that began in Santa Barbara, Iloilo.

The recognition capped Iloilo’s participation in the June 12 Parada ng Kalayaan, organized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), aimed at honoring regional narratives that shaped the nation’s independence.

Also present during the awarding were Badiangan’s Mayor Suzette Mamon, and Iloilo capitol department heads.

“This recognition is a proud moment for Iloilo. It honors our past while inspiring us to preserve and promote our culture for future generations,” said Defensor./PN
