Twin earthquakes hit Davao Or., Davao Occ.

The epicenter of a quake that struck off Davao Oriental on April 24 is seen in this Phivolcs map.

MANILA – Two earthquakes struck waters off Davao Oriental and Davao Occidental minutes apart early on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The first quake, a magnitude 4.5, hit 374 kilometers southwest of Sarangani, Davao Occidental around 11:28 a.m. It had a depth of 270 kilometers.

Fifteen minutes later, a stronger magnitude 4.7 temblor struck 63 kilometers northeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental.

At a depth of 11 meters, the quake was felt a “scarcely perceptible” Intensity 1 in Bislig City, Surigao Del Sur, said Phivolcs.

The tectonic earthquakes came after a Magnitude 6.5 quake that injured 5 people across Visayas on Tuesday afternoon, and a Magnitude 6.1 temblor that left at least 16 dead in Luzon on Monday.

There is “nothing irregular” with consecutive quakes in Davao, said Phivolcs research specialist Henry Peñarubia.

Wednesday’s quakes are not expected to spawn aftershocks or damage to property, said Phivolcs. (With ABS-CBN News/PN)
