A United Kingdom-based firm and local terminal operations specialists signified interest in developing the port of Dumangas town in Iloilo province, the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines said.
Seasia Logistics Philippines, Inc., the exclusive local partner of UK-based Nectar Group Limited, seeks to turn the port into a modern, international one, BCCP Chairman Chris Nelson told reporters.
SLPI executives have met with Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. to present their vision, he said.
Nelson said the company was set to do initial studies on the port’s infrastructure.
This was an offshoot of the business group’s trade mission in Iloilo last month, which drew participation from the SLPI and other British companies, the BCCP chief said.
The provincial government of Iloilo was reportedly keen on developing the Dumangas port into an international container terminal that can accommodate a larger number of bigger vessels.
Currently there are 10 roll-on, roll-off ships operating at the port to service the Negros Island and Cebu City routes, among other locations.
According to Nelson, the SLPI’s interest in developing the Dumangas port reflects the UK companies’ support for the infrastructure program of the Philippine government. (PNA)
