MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses captured the 21st University Games women’s volleyball tournament crown with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-13 victory over the University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas on Sunday at the Lamberto Macias Gym in Dumaguete City.
Led by Ennajie Laure, Cherry Rondina and Marivic Meneses, the Golden Tigresses finished the tournament winning all its seven matches to reclaim the women’s volleyball tiara.
The match was still close early in the opening set with the Golden Tigresses up 16-13 when Rondina, Meneses and Laure uncorked consecutive hits for a 20-14 lead. Errors by the Lady Altas allowed the Golden Tigresses to run away with the set.
Both teams were knotted in the second frame but the Golden Tigresses pulled up to a 15-7 edge on conversions by Meneses. The lead later grew to as high as 14 points behind Laure, Mary Pacres and Carla Sandoval.
The Golden Tigresses opened the third frame with a 12-1 lead but the Lady Altas were able to come to within 15-10. The Golden Tigresses maintained the five point edge before pulling away for good on hits by Laure and Meneses.
The De La Salle University Lady Spikers, meanwhile, salvaged the third place trophy in the tournament following a 25-12, 25-17, 21-25, 25-10 victory over the University of the East Lady Warriors.
Meanwhile, the Adamson University Falcons clinched the men’s volleyball crown with a five setter victory over the National University Bulldogs. The Far Eastern University Tamaraws settled for a third place finish.
In other results, UST leaned on Negrenses Lovielyn Pamatian, Aira Teodosio, and Luz Delfin to capture the women’s athletics championship. The FEU Tamaraws, meanwhile, ruled the men’s division./PN
